Spiced Ham

Did you know that “Spiced Ham” is the full name of what we call “SPAM?”  Yep.  The name of that delightful meaninacan is short for Spiced Ham.  I don’t remember ever trying it straight from the can, but I do remember having it heated up with eggs once years ago.

And the “Computer Geeks,” who sat in their mom’s basement with their cutting edge computers…the ones who figured ou ways to send countless copies of the same message to innumerable destinations sat there and ate SPAM and drank whatever their preferred soda was.  More likely whatever they could get their moms to buy for them.

Don’t misunderstand me — I am well aware that the computer geeks actually run the world, so if you’re a 3rd level hacker, please don’t take down my blog…where was I.  Oh!  So these guys and gals logged onto the ‘Net and not only found ways, but created new ones, for broadcast one-way communication.

Since those glorious below-ground level days, spammers have been at it consistently.   Nowadays they have simple programs that crawl the ‘Net looking for blogs like this one, and then the *hammer* the site with seemingly innocuous compliments about the posts, hoping to get posted as automatically approved comments.

What would be the benefit?  Well, if I posted a blog about baseball, and a spambot sent a comment that said, “This is the warmest feeling I have had reading a blog in a whole, please post more,” you can see two problems right away.  First, warm feelings from a baseball blog?   C’monnnn!  Second, did you mean, “…blog in a while,”?  Or did you mean, “…blog in a whole long time,” or something?

Ohhhh!!  I see!  Your email is something like freecreditsportscarrepairsfromanothercountry@yippee.com.  Oh I get it.  You don’t care as long as somebody spots your advertisement, although it’s ambiguous what your product is.  Or maybe abiguity is what you’re going for?  I personally would have proofed the comment before spamming.

This is a Christian-based site.  It’s a Pastor’s blog inside a Church site.  I have the moderation set so every single comment has to get approved before letting it through.  Granted: sometimes I end up incorrectly deleting real comments, but sheesh!

So all you real life spammers out there, please oh please cut down on the comment attempts!  They’re not getting through.  Thank you a while lot!

PS.  In the time it took to write this post, I got a spam showing me how great one guy’s hoodies are, and another inviting me to use them to buy properrty in Dubai.  Buh-bai!
